Cefquinomine is a 4th generation cephalosporin.
Cefquinome molecules penetrate the bacterial cell wall and bind to penicillin-binding proteins on the inner membrane. Here the molecules interfere with the action of transpeptidase and other cell-wall enzymes.
Cefquinome is able to penetrate the bacterial cell wall quickly after injection. The molecules have a high affinity for penicillin binding proteins and are resistant to ß-lactamases. These properties ensure that cell death occurs before resistance mechanisms are in place.
